An investigation is raised from the visit it was decided at, so the order sits in the clinical context that produced it.
That keeps the reason for the test attached to the test rather than remembered separately.
Tracking the result
An order stays open until a result comes back, which is what stops a test being ordered and then quietly forgotten.
Results can carry an attached document, so a report or image lives against the order rather than in a folder somewhere else.
On the patient record
Investigations remain on the patient record after the visit closes, alongside prescriptions and plans from the same encounter.
A later visit therefore opens with what was already ordered and what came back.
